the GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 12—she’s been holding court for years, and for good reason.
Nose: Opens like a cosy fireside in the Highlands: orange marmalade, mocha, nougat, damp leaves, amber ale, white peaches, dried apricots… and don’t forget that cheeky splash of strong breakfast tea. It’s sweet, malty, and just balanced enough to make you feel like life’s not completely terrible.
Palate: Hits the tongue with some proper substance. The oak is upfront, but it’s not bullying you—it’s more like a friendly giant offering a peppery Szechuan greeting with orange pith, tobacco, ginger, and a hint of sandalwood. Burnt toast, caramel, dark chocolate, and even a wisp of menthol make a cameo. Rich, complex, and with enough kick to make you feel alive.
Finish: Medium to long, with menthol, black tea, and lingering orange notes. Perfect for a cold night when the wind’s howling like a banshee and your heating’s on the fritz. Dr. Barrie has done a wee bit of magic here, coaxing darker, earthier notes out of the sherry cask without charging you the price of a small island.
Verdict: If GlenDronach’s been a staple in your life, Batch 12 just reinforces why. It’s warm, hearty, and full of character—the kind of whisky that makes you grin like a fool in the snow. A proper Highland hug in a glass.
