Oban 18 isn’t here to shout — it’s the quiet sort that knows it’s the smartest, best-dressed person in the room and lets you figure that out on your own.
Nose: Like walking into a Highland kitchen the morning after a ceilidh — ripe bananas and pears on the counter, peach cobbler cooling by the window, bacon sizzling, and a curl of peat smoke sneaking in from the hearth. There’s honey in the air and a faint whiff of someone baking scones.
Palate: Rich, oily, and balanced — the whisky equivalent of a well-worn leather armchair. Toffee sweetness cozies up to dried fruit, a pinch of salt, and pepper that snaps at you like a grumpy sheepdog. The sea’s in there too — seaweed and brine — with smoke weaving through it like gossip in a village pub.
Finish: Dry and oaky, with grain and pepper lingering like the last stubborn guests after a wedding. It leaves you warm, slightly smug, and contemplating whether you’ve just found your new favorite.
Verdict: The 18’s got maturity without losing its charm — deeper than the 14, a touch more refined, but still with enough Highland mischief to keep things interesting.
