Following the grainy glory of the 1st Edition, this second release of Colere continues Westland’s deep dive into barley varieties like it’s writing a thesis on flavor. This time, they’ve chosen Talisman—a 2-row winter barley descended from Marris Otter, which sounds like an old-timey British detective but is actually a very respectable grain.
Why Talisman? Because apparently, it’s not just about how much barley you can squeeze into a bottle—it’s about how much personality you can squeeze into it. This whiskey was aged in refill casks, which is distiller-speak for “let the barley do the talking.” And boy, does it have opinions.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
A citrusy garden party where lemon curd and raspberry coulis are gossiping politely while woody vanilla leans against a tree in a tasteful cardigan.
Palate:
Brown sugar rolls in like a sweet-talking rogue, followed closely by orange marmalade with a bit of a tangy attitude. Bittersweet dark chocolate and forest fruits join in like that mysterious couple at the end of the bar—you’re not sure what their story is, but you want in.
Finish:
That unmistakable orange chocolate note just won’t leave—like a charming guest who overstays their welcome but somehow refills your glass before you can complain.
