The Rye and the Sea

The day began like the others. Sun too high. Air too still. I wrote a little. It came slow. The sentences weren’t strong at first. I opened a bottle of the new rye. The Signature Edition, they call it. My name printed across the label like a quiet boast.

They say it’s a blend—six years in Indiana, four in Kentucky. Same mashbill, though. 95 rye, 5 barley. Two places. One idea. That pleases me.

The finish is what lingers. Rum and Oloroso. The kind of thing you don’t think you want until you taste it and know you were wrong. Sweetness on the front, spice at the back. Like a good woman or a bad decision—soft at first, then it stays with you.

It doesn’t pretend to be old. And I respect that. It’s young, yes, but it doesn’t taste young. The casks see to that. They lend it weight. A little sea salt. A little memory.
